FAQ
Do I need a license to drive a scooter?
To operate a motor scooter legally, the operator must possess a valid Class E driver's license and be at least 16 years of age. If the scooter is equipped with an engine of 50cc or larger, additional licensing requirements apply. Specifically, the operator must hold a motorcycle endorsement or a 'Motorcycle Only' driver's license, in accordance with state regulations. These endorsements ensure that operators have undergone the necessary training and testing to safely handle more powerful motorized vehicles on public roads.
Can I drive a scooter on the interstate?
Mopeds are permitted for use on all public roads except highways, as they are restricted to a maximum of 2 brake horsepower (BHP). This contrasts with motor vehicles required to have a minimum of 5 BHP for interstate or highway driving. Furthermore, operating mopeds with their engines running on sidewalks is strictly prohibited by law.
